This just keeps getting better. Truly a hidden gem, not many people watch it because of the CGI.

TenseiSensei • 1 year ago

I'm gonna be honest, as a person who almost always thinks that CGI (in most cases) is just lazy/cheap animation, this studio has done it in such a way (at least, for this anime) that they've avoided the flaws of CGI.

The movement flows and scenes flow fine.

The things that so far I see falling behind is just the facial expressions. I mean, they're there, but they're definitely not as good or fluid as normal animation, and look wonky at times.

Well, obviously normal animation is going to look better, but this CGI honestly is good enough so far for a story like this. Enjoying it.

And I suppose since they're doing CGI only they should have it to a quality where it's actually bearable, and it is.

Edit: something I do want to mention is according to the reliable source wikipedia this series adaptation is supposed to commemorate studio polygon's 40th anniversary. Not sure what that means I guess it just means that this is the work they're doing for their 40th anniversary? Don't matter, good work polygon.

go1 • 1 year ago

Even new bofuri did CGI and it wasnt that bad,the only thing i felt when i watched was "dimension shock" when suddenly 2d went 3d and then back to 2d.
If i have to choose between censorship or uncensored but CGI then i DEFINITELY preffer CGI.

TenseiSensei • 1 year ago

I mean definitely there's fine lines between what is acceptable in CG and what isn't.

I will be honest, Chainsaw man was great but one thing I kind of disliked was the heavy usage of CG.

I mean, the series blew up... massively. While I understand it's also an art style thing, I would definitely appreciate it if the studio for followup seasons (which certainly Chainsaw man will get) animated everything with minimal CG usage

The comparison that I was making though, was particular to "Does this scene have CG? And if yes, is the CG's explanation lack of effort or funding?"
And more often than not, it is one of the two. I almost certainly expect studios to give it their all and avoid CG at all costs if they have the money to avoid it.
But I also understand that CG sometimes is a stylistic thing. Look no further than the recent Bleach TYBW arc, where CG was used during Yamamoto's bankai. This CG use is ok, because it's a stylistic thing.

But yea, end of the day my point is that if a scene can be done without CG, it should be done without CG (so long as the scene itself doesn't change, like censored/uncensored).

go1 • 1 year ago

I dont even touch censored versions cause they're unko so i cant say about censorships buuut... CG is okay for me cause even anime games use CG and they're popular EVEN THOUGH the studios that make them WORK HARD to make them unpopular by heavily censoring them, dialogues rewritte/removed scenes and shots removed or blackboxed.
EVEN WITH THESE censorships the games are popular so if they wouldnt be censored they would be world wide hits and jump from double A to triple A. But now the only thing that can save them is purging rotten apples that censor like twitter did.

CGI-ist is going to be a new urban dictionary word.

Xyrus • 1 year ago

The new Trigun is good too.

Akkhu Desu Ga? • 1 year ago

Haven't watched the original one but searched on youtube and yep I am hooked on reboot.

Fortune's Feline • 1 year ago

Wholeheartedly agree, I look forward to it every week!

Flupser • 1 year ago

the cgi has not really much of a strange feeling, i saw worse

Muczkapl • 1 year ago

The bugs are so crunchy
Thankfully this didn't devolve into tree climbing simulator 2023 for half the anime. Definietly excited for what else this has to offer. The ed and op are such a bop this is the only anime this season that has me watching both of them.

The anime veteran • 1 year ago

I was looking forward to the climb taking at least 3-4 episodes

vovan1 • 1 year ago

me too, and only thing we got is awkward toilet break xD

Xyrus • 1 year ago

I would not think about how they deal with some toilet break-thing if they did not brought it up,

MeguminExplosion • 1 year ago

I quite enjoy girls climbing for a whole season -> girls climbing reference<-

Xyrus • 1 year ago

I would prefer the climbing down to be a bit more longer while it brought more things to wonder on that huge tree but well I guess there are more things happening on the roots that its trunk.

Xyrus • 1 year ago

For the love of God, this comment perfectly fits your pfp holy sht

Fortune's Feline • 1 year ago

I already commented on this, but I think your comment is a better place to bring it up again.

I don't know why she freaked over it, I mean, there's no way that was the first time either of them had needed to empty their "reservoirs" in the trip, I'm sure they had done so many times before, Kaina included, so it shouldn't have elicited her almost knocking him to his death. Kind of surprising. Still an enjoyable point of address either way since most anime tend to gloss over that particular biological function.

Niko-kun • 1 year ago

Bro is just munching on some crunchy bugs nothing weird there 😤 Rie Takahashi’s voice is music to my ears though, Ririha is defo wife material

Fortune's Feline • 1 year ago

You have to wonder how strong his jaw and digestion must be to power through a shell like that so easily unless the insects have really weak shells or exoskeletons. Most of our insects have Chiton as their shell and it gets thicker as size increases. Speaking as someone who has eaten insects befor, some of them (not all) really require a lots of chewing and grinding unless you apply heat or something to break the Chiton down.
So it brings up the question of whether the Canopy dwellers have evolved enhanced characteristics needed to consume insects or if the insects themselves are actually much weaker than what we would expect in comparison to our own?

Niko-kun • 1 year ago

“Speaking as someone who has eaten insects before” 🤨🤨🤨🤨🤨 Damn bro! As a person who’s terrified of insects (excluding ants and butterflies) I have to commend your courage 😂 Quick question: what did they taste like? Not that I’m planning on trying but you know…
As for what you said, I think they’ve probably evolved so they’re able to eat them both raw and cooked. I mean I doubt a person in this day and age can just grab a beetle off a tree and just eat it like that 😂 hell even a meal like the one Kaina made would probably be a stretch for most people.

Fortune's Feline • 1 year ago

Well TBH, I can tell it really depends on the insect just like anything else. Mealworms tend to taste mostly like what they are being fed....so often they taste to me a bit like cornmeal with a hint of potato. Other things.....stinkbugs for instance are putrid and taste absolutely awful, acrid and horrible and leaving a lingering nasal burn that ruins your smell for about 20 minutes.....(those are often eaten by accident when eating grapes in my vineyard that they are hiding in.)
Grasshoppers taste kind of like shrimp with a hint of pop corn (never eaten them raw as they can carry parasites and other things, but they fry well and this also sterilizes them and makes them more palatable.)

I could continue, but I think this is a good place to mention that there is actually a thriving "up and coming" industry in the U.S. that is pushing crickets and other insects as sources of sustainable protein and Cricket flour is now officially a "thing". You can find chips and cookies made with it being stocked in some popular stores without too much difficulty.

Though, I should point out that in other places, (some parts of Asia for instance) eating insects is not only nothing new, but has immense cultural significance foodwise and finding vendors on streets grilling skewers of bugs or offering paper bags of various fried ones or all manner of other styles etc... is something that has gone on so long as to have it's beginnings lost in obscurity.

Niko-kun • 1 year ago

Damn this has been really informative thanks bro 🤝

Fortune's Feline • 1 year ago

No problem, happy to share my unique expertise. XD I'll even throw in a freebie and tell you that "9 Lives" brand canned catfood tastes nothing like it smells, it smells all meaty and rich, but tastes pretty much like wet paper. Also Cheese dog biscuits taste more like stale liver than anything, they do not taste like cheese. (To my immense disappointment)

Niko-kun • 1 year ago

What have you been eating to know all that my guy? 😂😂 I’m concerned about your eating habits ngl want me to treat you to something? McDonalds? Noodles? Gyro?

MeguminExplosion • 1 year ago

No wonder she sounds like megumin.

TenseiSensei • 1 year ago

Megumin how do you not know what you sound like

Well, I guess we usually don't know what we sound like unless we hear a replay of it. Megumin doesn't have that option.

I kinda thought but didnt feel like looking it up and the person cleared all doubt.

SEAL!!!!!!!!!!!

Did you feed it some fish? Don't be rude, bring fish to the date.

QuadL • 1 year ago

They also kilded one too... not as livid but still sad.

wwlaos • 1 year ago

It wouldn't have survived, either way. It was too badly hurt, and they didn't have the kind of supplies necessary to treat it with them or a nearby marine veterinary clinic.

Yog-Sothoth • 1 year ago

Several days of climbing and she didn't even mention wtf is going on with the war and stuff. Way to prepare.

Grandpa Lampshade • 1 year ago

Let's see, I could be telling him what to expect when we finish our descent. However right now I have more pressing issues! Namely the possibility that he might hear me peeing.

Porthya • 1 year ago

Rewatch the 2nd episode, she told them all about both the water crisis and the war, he just can't understand and accept war as a concept since he grew up in such a small and isolated community struggling for survival that war would be an abomination.

Porthya • 1 year ago

Does half the audience for this anime watch it with eyes closed? She told them about the war and water crisis, it's Kaina who's not adjusting easily to the idea of enough human population that they'd start wars with one another.

TenseiSensei • 1 year ago

Like other people have said, she clearly mentioned it.

The thing is, it doesn't come to your mind that Kaina has no clue what the world below is like. He's never seen human's kill each other, much less humans besides the elderly in his village.

His life has just been hunting bugs and living up there practically alone.

It'd be hard to explain to him honestly, but at least he adapts very quickly.

QuadL • 1 year ago

Adapts? He sees they are in essence "hunting" him but then she tells him also that as long as they have that little package they won't sink in the snow... But did she ever tell him how to use it?! Now she will open her package and unfold the foil so she can float but he might just wave that package around with all he's got... as he sinks to the bottom...

wwlaos • 1 year ago

I kind of want to see that. XD

LesK • 1 year ago

did you not notice the fully armored soldier's corpse at 3:43 just floating there? he's not wearing anything other than his armor. no 'bag'. no 'raft'. nothing. didn't you wonder how armor that could deflect those other soldiers' bullets was light enough to allow a corpse to float?

you missed the line at 13:58 'don't forget to cut off the snowfoil sticks.' referring to that 'steed'... then at 14:06 the 'steed' rapidly sinks under the snow... with no limbs.

7:24 they are called fuuyuu bukuro. snowfoil bag. then immediately after that line the 'steeds' i would guess, with all their limbs, are shown swimming in a pod under the snow.

those 'steeds' are easily floating IN PLACE and swimming on the surface WITH people and equipment on their backs. it would take a small whale's displacement to do that on Earth. dolphins... which those 'steeds' kinda sorta look about the same size... have a difficult time keeping a human in JUST a wet-suit on their backs and staying afloat unless they are moving rapidly along the surface of the ocean.

i would guess the snowfoil bag merely contains a short section of one of those 'steeds' fins and this allows somebody to easily float atop the Snow Sea.
